Risk Assessment

• Human Health Risk Assessment
• Ecological Risk Assessment
• Risk-based Corrective Action

How clean is clean?  SAGE takes a risk-based approach in the evaluation of our clients' sites that allows us to assess the need for and cost of cleanup relative to the risks posed to human health and the environment. Where appropriate, risk assessment can be performed to determine if contaminants at a site actually present a risk and, if so, what level of remediation or site management is necessary to reduce this risk to an acceptable level.  This evaluation of both the need for and the effectiveness of potential remediation activities and the subsequent development of appropriate clean-up levels is termed "Risk Based Corrective Action."  SAGE's approach eliminates needless remediation activities, may substantially reduce project costs, and focuses efforts toward reducing the risk resulting from a contaminated site in the most expedient and cost efficient manner possible.

SAGE has expertise in the preparation of both human health and ecological risk assessments.  To develop defensible risk assessments, we collect and/or evaluate all appropriate site investigation and remediation data to determine conservative estimates of the concentrations of contaminants at the site. This information is used to develop conceptual models of both the current and projected future contaminant distributions.  Risk is evaluated based on the concentration and toxicity of the contaminants and the degree to which people and/or wildlife are exposed to them.  SAGE also employs appropriate analytical and/or numerical models in the preparation of risk assessments, including vapor intrusion to indoor air, unsaturated zone transport models, and saturated zone flow and transport models.
